Dear fellow travelers,
How many of us have heard this before? It sounds simple enough, but as with many other things, is often easier said than done. When we stop to imagine, we can see how this statement could prove true. If each home were peaceful, and each person coming from a peaceful home, then that energy would radiate out. Like a stone dropped into a lake, it would create ripples that spread outward and have far-reaching effects.
But how do we accomplish this in our own lives? It’s easy to think peaceful thoughts when everything is going smoothly. What about when that driver cuts you off in traffic? What about when that stranger was rude to you? Or when a friend behaves selfishly? Our natural reaction is to ... well, react.
It can become even more overwhelming when we look at the state of the world at large. When we watch the news and see all the violence, hatred, and negativity existent in the world. It’s easy to feel helpless. How can creating peace at home possibly have any effect on the chaos of the world?
This is precisely when this sentiment should be a comfort to us. We don’t have to solve all of the world’s problems. We don’t need to have control over the entire population. What we have control over is ourselves, our thoughts, and our actions.
The first step is to find peace within ourselves. How many of us have constant battles going on inside of our own hearts? How many of us feel as though we are under siege from the negative thoughts in our own minds? If we are mindful enough to see it, we can often find the enemy of peace not in the outer world, but right inside of ourselves.
It’s that voice inside that points out all of your flaws. The one that resides as a constant judge, critiquing your choices and downplaying your accomplishments. I call this voice the inner Critic. The Critic wants to convince you that you are not good enough, not strong enough, or smart enough, talented enough, attractive enough ... the list goes on.
The Critic comes from a place of fear. It wants to play it safe, to keep you in your comfort zone so that you won’t take any risks. It will try to convince you that nothing will turn out right. It may keep you from manifesting your heart’s desires. With the Critic’s voice chattering in our minds, it’s difficult to hear the whispering of our intuition, or Higher Selves.
Fortunately, there are ways to calm the voice of this inner Critic. For one thing, being mindful that this is going on is a great step in the right direction. When these negative thoughts start clamoring for your attention, recognize them for what they are. A manifestation of your own doubt and fear.
Take a deep breath, and choose a different thought. Instead of self-criticism, choose self-acceptance. Think of yourself as your own best friend. What would you say to this friend? Choose to treat yourself with kindness, compassion, and love in order to create peace within yourself. This is truly where it begins.
When we are at peace with ourselves, we respond to people and situations with a peaceful heart, and the energy we put out into the world expands and multiplies.
This can understandably present a challenge for us. It takes practice and mindfulness, and sometimes we may need support. If you would like help in freeing yourself from the fears and self-doubt that keep you from connecting with the wisdom of your Higher Self and creating peace in your own life, I am always here to support you in your journey.
